How to install a spartan locker
Below are the installation instructions for our Spartan Locker. Click here to download the file PDF File, 1. Thank you for your understanding! Unbolt the barring cap bolts — Make sure you mark the direction of the barring caps because they need to go back on the same side and in the same direction along with this the shims need to go back on the same side. Be careful when you pull out the carrier with the spider gears because they want to fall out. After you pull the carrier out take it over to your workbench and remove the main ring gear.
Next: You will need to knock the shim out of the spider gear pin and yes it is a pain. Time to install your locker — I hope it did not take you too long to get to this point because of that annoying spider gear pin!
The instructions that came with the Spartan Locker are quite generic, made for many different vehicle years, makes, and models. Youtube again will be your best friend if any questions need to be answered. Overall, installing the Spartan Locker into the carrier is a drama-free experience.
I will say it is important to get the washers that come with the locker in the right direction. Check the Gap between spacer and cross pin. Install your main ring gear torque to 55lb, you will need a vise and yes I did not have one so it was a pain! Reinstall the carrier and the bearing caps.
Make sure to install the bearing caps as they were before. After the carrier is installed, and the bearing caps are installed re-check your backlash to make sure it is still within the factory specs.
Ours was a backlash of If you can change your brakes or bolt on a new starter or alternator, you can install a Spartan locker. Time-wise, it took me about 8 hours over two days, but this was the first time I'd ever pulled my third, and I spent lots of time scratching my chin and drinking beer and consulting my manuals.
Doing it again, I bet would be 3 hours tops. Don't bother reading the directions that come with, they're generic garbage. Read the Aussie locker writeup on ZUKs site, gearinstalls. You will have to pull the ring gear to remove the center pin, but this will not affect your backlash.
Driving impressions - I'll be back to update this once I get this bad boy on some rocks, and again after I've driven it on a snowy road. Right now I've had it around the block a few times, and am impressed. I'd heard that it would click loudly, bang every time I got on the throttle, and bind up and chirp the tires if I didn't coast around corners. None of those things happened. It clicks quietly on tight corners, not obtrusively at all.
I also don't notice it when turning and accelerating from a stop, unless I really punched it, at which point I could feel the rear not want to come around, but not bad enough that I chirped or scuffed the tires.
I'm totally stoked. I know it's going to add to traction off-road, and so far its on-road manners are much better than I was even hoping for.
I'll be back to update as I get it in more situations. Last edited by KidVermicious; at AM. Find More Posts by KidVermicious. You should still check backlash Want wait to see some wheelin pics! You get those sliders on yet? No, those are waiting on something You'll dig it. Yeah let us know for sure how it is off the road.
I bought this back in January and it has been at the dealership for over a month now. Only has 37 miles on it. Not really sure whats going on. Any input would be greatly appreciated.
Bister Guest. Mine clunks at times at low speeds around the yard, turning etc. Did you see the video I did of my locker? They do make noise, but I don't think it should be scraping. Last edited by a moderator: Apr 3, Yes when it turns it should but this is doing it randomly and even going straight and it should not be doing that. How do I view the video?
