Harvest moon special edition nices
However, since you don't have to spend your money on things like rent, paying for food or other items, it's pretty easy to acquire and horde large sums of money that you'll never even spend. Doesn't really seem like he'll be able to understand what it's like to be human if he doesn't have that much to worry about, now does it?
Then again, there's a number of things that don't really make a lot of sense when it comes to the little robot boy. For instance, while you'll wind up working on the farm, you'll get increases to your stats, but these don't exactly translate into anything. Cooking food won't vastly improve your skill points that are used or strengthen your health. Tilling the soil or picking crops won't make you stronger or faster in the fields. Constantly using tools won't appear to minimize the number of skill points that you spend whenever you use a tool.
Why include this if it isn't going to have an impact on the actual gameplay? Then again, there really haven't been any significant additions or improvements to the gameplay to speak of. While this is deemed to be the "Special Edition," there are practically no true extras in the title to make it stand out as much stronger than the PSP version.
Apart from a few new tasks given to you and a dictionary that defines practically everything within the game, there's very little that is new to the title.
What's more, the translation over to the PS2 doesn't fully take advantage of the system, with a control scheme that is lightly ported over to the DualShock without any new functionality. Nor does the title take full advantage of the PS2's visual capabilities. While it's not the most visually stunning title around, and it doesn't need to be, the graphics for the game are plainer on a television than the sharper screen of the PSP.
The sprites and the character models are basic, and while solid enough, not a vast improvement over those found on the portable -- merely larger. You're not going to be blown away by the areas you'll explore, but there is some variety in the game, with underground, forest and desert areas, and there are even some nice little touches. For instance, you'll find leaves and debris blowing around during storms.
Musically, the title is nice and understated, although it could use a little variety over the course of the game. Verdict Compared to other Harvest Moon titles, this one feels like it strays pretty far away from the franchise's formula. The inconvenient truth is that while you still harvest crops, the farther into the game you go, the less important farming becomes and the more island exploration takes over.
Unfortunately, the unbalanced level of exploration, slow development of the story and nonsensical character development coupled with his virtual isolation makes the game one of those titles that appeals to an even smaller niche of this niche genre.
